Massachusetts:
James A. Gilrein, II of Dennis, MA installed as Masonic District Officer
Friday January 25, 2008, 10:30 AM EST
James A. Gilrein, II was installed as District Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts, and will preside over seven lodges in the Twenty First Masonic District for the next year. The 235 lodges and 40,000 Freemasons in the Commonwealth are divided into 31 Districts, and led by a District Deputy Grand Master.
The Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts was chartered in 1733, following the establishment of the Grand Lodge of England in 1717, and Ireland in 1725, making it the third oldest in the world, and the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. In 2008 the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts will be marking its 275th Anniversary. The culmination will take place during the weekend of May 2-5, 2008, when public dignitaries and Masons from across the country and around the world will visit Boston for its celebration.
As a District Deputy Grand Master, Gilrein serves as the Grand Master’s personal representative to the lodges in his District. Roger W. Pageau of Northborough MA was installed as the 86th Grand Maser of Masons in Massachusetts and will be the head of the Fraternity for the next three years. The Twenty First Masonic District is comprised of the following lodges: Mount Horeb Lodge, Dennis, Pilgrim Lodge, Harwich, St. Martin’s Lodge and Nauset Daylight Lodge, Chatham, Universal Lodge, Orleans, Adams Lodge, Wellfleet, and King Hirams Lodge, Provincetown.
Raised and educated in the Dennis Yarmouth School District Gilrein graduated from the Cape Cod Community College and earned his Associates Degree. In 1991 he began his Masonic career in Massachusetts “when after the encouragement of Charlie Chamberlain of South Dennis” he joined Mount Horeb Lodge in Dennis. He served as the Worshipful Master, or presiding officer, in 1996-97 and again in 2005-06. Masons use the original definition of “worshipful, meaning “honorable”; English mayors and judges are still addressed as “Worshipful.” As District Deputy Grand Master, Gilrein will be called “Right Worshipful.” Gilrein is also a member of the Order of Eastern Star Masona Chapter 134, EPAC Grotto, Sylvester Baxter Royal Arch Masons, and a member of Nauset Light Lodge, and King Hiram’s Lodge which recently celebrated the Cornerstone Rededication Ceremony this past summer in Provincetown. Gilrein also conducted a Masonic Building Dedication Ceremony for the new Dennis Police Station this past fall.
Gilrein is a REALTOR with ERA Martin Surette Realty, LLC of West Dennis, holds a USCG 100 Ton Master Captains License, and is the owner operator of Deep Commitments.Com, an ocean scattering business of cremated remains which operates year round that Gilrein started in 2003.
Gilrein and his wife, Janet, have three children, Daniel Gilrein, 23, of South Dennis, Stephanie Gilrein, 21, and Peter Gilrein 18, of Dennis.
Freemasons belong to the world’s oldest and largest fraternity. Comprised of men from every race, religion, nationality, and opinion, it aims to promote friendship, morality, and brotherly love among its members. By contributing to the improvement of the individual man, through him the institution helps make his family, workplace, and community better. North American Masonic philanthropies contribute more than $3 million every day, 70 percent of which goes directly to the general public.
