SOUTH DENNIS —

How does a town honor a man’s invaluable time and vision?

A group of four people proposed an answer to selectmen Tuesday night. “We would like public support to rename a section of Route 134 the Charles E. Chamberlain Parkway in memory of a good citizen and friend,” said Jim Plath of Dennis.

Chamberlain, a longtime Dennis resident and owner of Patriot Square in South Dennis, died Jan. 8.

Plath proposed that the tribute include signage, planting flowers in the median and asking business owners to plant trees at the front of their properties. “Once you approve this request and determine which section, we’d come back in August with a presentation and plan a renaming dedication in the fall,” he added.

The stretch of Route 134 north of Route 6 was originally named East-West Dennis Road. Plath suggested renaming the area between Bob Crowell and Upper County roads, which passes Chamberlain’s Patriot Square and Post Office Square properties.

Calling Chamberlain “a great visionary of the community,” Helen Wilkerson of South Dennis said, “It would be an awfully good tribute to the Chamberlain family. Charlie Chamberlain spurred year-round development providing jobs and enhancing the quality of life for all.” Wilkerson said the Chamberlain family is “thrilled” with the idea.

Steve Boyson of South Dennis presented a history of the development of Route 134 and exits 9A and 9B, “the only cloverleaf on Cape Cod.” He said when Hyannis was considering the development of Route 132, officials repeatedly said, “Let’s do it right like Dennis did.” Boyson attributed the vision and accompanying hard work and dedication to both the cloverleaf and Route 134 business development to Chamberlain.

Selectmen unanimously approved the concept and will appoint a committee, including Plath, Wilkerson, Boyson and Peter McDowell of Dennis.

“I don’t see any opposition to this,” said Selectman Wayne Bergeron. “Charlie Chamberlain’s service to the town was long and commendable. Selectman Alan Tuttle agreed. “Obviously it’s a good idea,” he said. “When I think of the tax money generated by Charlie’s work and vision, it’s amazing.”

McDowell said he couldn’t think of anyone in the last 50 years “who left his mark so admirably on this town.”

Town Engineer Joe Rodricks said Route 134 is an appropriate road to rename. “It would be co-named Route 134/Charles E. Chamberlain Parkway [as the section between Bob Crowell Road and Route 6A is co-named East-West Dennis Road]. Usually every homeowner and business on a road has to change their address, but that wouldn’t be the case here.”

Once the committee, which is expected to include a member of the Chamberlain family, completes its study, the proposal will return to selectmen for approval.
